WHO's Who in Breast Cytology: Case-Based Overview of WHO Reporting System for Breast Cytopathology

Course overview

Breast fine-needle aspiration (FNA) is an inexpensive, minimally-invasive, well-tolerated technique that provides rapid and accurate diagnosis. Over recent years, the number of breast FNA procedures has dramatically decreased in many medically well-resourced countries. This decline is largely due to the rise of popularity of core-needle biopsy, which is perceived to have higher diagnostic accuracy. Breast FNA cytology and core-needle biopsy each provide complementary roles. There is tremendous value in maintaining competency and skill in breast FNAs. The WHO System for Reporting Breast Cytopathology will provide an update to the IAC Yokohama System and will serve as an organized approach to classifying breast FNA samples. This presentation will review the WHO System and apply it to common entities in a case-based approach, including morphologic mimics and immunocytochemical pitfalls.
