Emergency Techniques for the General Practitioner

Course overview

This cadaver-based course covers emergency management of penetrating thoracic and abdominal trauma through hands-on practice and discussion. Procedures include thoracostomy tube placement, tracheostomy, laryngeal foreign body removal, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation, abdominocentesis, nasoesophageal tube placement, and endoscopic foreign body removal. By the end of this course, participants will be able to: - Perform Abdominal and Thoracic FAST (AFAST/TFAST) examinations to identify free fluid - Perform thoracocentesis and abdominocentesis using appropriate technique and landmarks - Place and manage nasogastric (NG) tubes and esophagostomy (E) tubes - Perform urinary catheterization in male and female patients - Demonstrate central venous catheter placement and surgical cutdown techniques - Perform nasotracheal oxygen supplementation and basic airway management - Perform emergency tracheostomy and chest tube placement - Deliver high-quality CPR using current BLS and ALS principles - Select and prioritize appropriate emergency procedures based on clinical presentation
