Course overview

EMS providers are subject to diagnostic errors, treatment delays, and sometimes fatal patient outcomes due to the complex nature of grey area calls where symptoms may mimic multiple conditions and don't fit clearly into established protocols. Research shows that up to 75% of diagnostic errors in emergency medicine can be prevented through systematic assessment techniques, recognition of cognitive biases, and structured approaches to diagnostic uncertainty. This interactive online course will teach you to identify diagnostic ambiguity in field presentations, apply serial assessment and trending techniques to differentiate between similar-appearing medical emergencies, and use clinical reasoning frameworks to build strong field impressions despite incomplete information. Additionally, you will learn to recognize and avoid cognitive traps like anchoring bias and confirmation bias, communicate diagnostic uncertainty effectively to receiving facilities, and develop the clinical judgment skills necessary to provide excellent patient care even when definitive diagnosis remains unclear in the prehospital setting.
