Course overview

Participants will be able to define trauma with an emphasis on how trauma is rooted in early attachment experiences, differentiate traditional diagnostic presentations from trauma-informed care and attachment theory, and explain how attachment patterns and early relational experiences shape trauma responses and long-term behavioral outcomes, and interpersonal relationships. Participants will be able to identify trauma responses through a nervous system lens and how symptoms present in different settings and assess the impact of cultural, systemic, and generational attachment-related trauma across environments, including behavioral health and criminal justice settings, and its impact on engagement and outcomes. Participants will apply culturally responsive and equitable approaches to care, identifying potential biases, including heteronormative and culturally dominant assumptions, that may impact assessment and treatment and develop trauma-informed treatment strategies that prioritize safety, regulation, and relational repair.
