PHARMACY LAWS AND RULES DISCIPLINE COURSE

Course overview

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to: Interpret and apply Federal and Florida pharmacy laws and administrative rules to pharmacy practice; Identify legal requirements for prescribing, dispensing, labeling, and recordkeeping of controlled substances; Explain the pharmacist s corresponding responsibility under the Controlled Substances Act; Demonstrate compliance with DEA registration, ordering, inventory, and security requirements; Recognize and respond appropriately to controlled substance theft, loss, or diversion; Analyze exceptions for emergency dispensing, electronic prescriptions, and telepharmacy; Apply Florida-specific statutes and rules to real-world pharmacy practice scenarios; Prepare for regulatory inspections, audits, and professional disciplinary processes. EDUCATIONAL NEEDS The course is provided to meet the education need of Board Ordered Disciplinary Continuing Education. The 12-hour laws and rules program includes review and analysis of the laws regulating the profession of pharmacy in the State of Florida with information on recent changes to Florida Statutes and Board of Pharmacy rules. The remainder of the continuing education focuses on (a) Federal laws related to: 1. Handling, management, and dispensing of controlled substances, 2. Protected patient information; and, 3. Medicare. (b) Chapters 456, 499 and 893, F.S; (c) Florida Medicaid program; (d) Nursing home and Assisted Living Facility regulations; (e) Prescriber laws and regulations; (f) Pharmacy ethics; (g) The Joint Commission (TJC) Standards; (h) Food and Drug Administration policies and procedures; (i) Implementation of disaster and emergency preparedness plans by Florida pharmacists and pharmacy services providers; and, (j) Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) guidelines and requirements for pharmacy employers.
