Introduction to high intensity training for occupational therapy: Translating neurorehab research into real-world occupation

Course overview

This course prepares OTPs to deliver high intensity neurorehabilitation that supports occupational performance for stroke survivors. Participants will learn how to use therapeutic use of self as a clinical instrument, apply the principles of neuroplasticity to intervention planning, and target the four pillars of occupational mobility that limit participation in daily life. The course covers clinical safety parameters, including risk classification, blood pressure thresholds, heart rate calculations, and rate of perceived exertion, so therapists can push intensity without compromising client safety. Participants will learn to administer six standardized assessments that measure progress in functional mobility, endurance, balance, and quality of life. This course provides the foundation for clinical reasoning in high intensity training as an OT. This course is designed for occupational therapists working in inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient neurorehabilitation, home health, and community based settings who serve adults recovering from stroke. It matters because too many survivors are discharged before reaching the level of function that allows them to return to meaningful occupations. This training initiates therapists to deliver care that produces lasting change in occupational performance.
