Learning Objectives Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: Define the different types of diabetes and explain their systemic effects on the body. Identify common oral manifestations associated with controlled and uncontrolled diabetes. Discuss the relationship between periodontal disease and diabetes management. Recognize signs and symptoms of diabetic emergencies, including hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, in the dental setting. Explain how diabetes can affect healing, infection risk, and dental treatment outcomes. Review appropriate treatment modifications and appointment considerations for diabetic dental patients. Demonstrate the importance of obtaining and updating comprehensive medical histories for diabetic patients. Discuss the impact of medications used to manage diabetes and their relevance to dental care. Educate patients on the connection between oral health and glycemic control. Apply risk management and patient safety protocols when treating diabetic patients in the dental office. Course Description This continuing education course will provide dental professionals with an in-depth understanding of diabetes and its impact on oral and systemic health. Participants will review the relationship between diabetes and periodontal disease, wound healing, infection control, xerostomia, and other oral complications commonly seen in diabetic patients. The course will discuss the importance of recognizing signs and symptoms of uncontrolled diabetes, obtaining accurate medical histories, monitoring patient safety, and modifying dental treatment when necessary. Emphasis will also be placed on patient education, medical emergencies related to diabetes, and collaborative care between dental and medical professionals to improve overall patient outcomes.
