Course overview

Nurses are in a unique position to help the overweight patient. This continuing education course discusses obesity, its etiology and health risks associated with the condition. Techniques for assessment, planning interventions and evaluation of the results are discussed. Also addressed is the problem of weight bias and the need for sensitivity in the care of the obese patient. Course Objectives: ¿Describe obesity and the methods used to measure it in adults and children. ¿Identify health consequences associated with obesity. ¿Discuss factors that contribute to obesity. ¿Describe how to analyze dietary intake and diet composition. ¿Describe techniques used to measure resting metabolic rate (RMR) physical activity and fitness. ¿Discuss skills needed to help patients recognize and overcome emotional eating. ¿Describe common theories of behavior and how they are associated with obesity. ¿Identify communication strategies which foster a therapeutic relationship with the obese patient. ¿Identify sound approaches to dietary modification. ¿Identify necessary components of a successful exercise program for the obese patient. ¿Describe different non-dieting philosophies for obesity management. ¿Describe the clinical application of pharmacotherapy for weight control. ¿Describe bariatric surgery as an effective treatment option for severe obesity. ¿Discuss behavioral factors that enhance weight loss and maintenance. ¿Discuss the issue of weight bias and steps needed to create a sensitive health care environment.
