Course overview

This one-hour contact lens course is designed to enhance the understanding of contact lens materials, their evolution, performance characteristics, clinical significance, and practical application within modern contact lens practice for opticians and other ECPs. As contact lens technology has advanced, lens materials have become increasingly sophisticated, incorporating improvements in oxygen transmission, wettability, moisture retention, durability, deposit resistance, comfort, and visual performance. The class will examine the historical development of contact lens materials beginning with early glass scleral lenses and progressing through PMMA, rigid gas permeable materials, hydrogel lenses, silicone hydrogel technologies, and contemporary specialty materials. Participants will analyze the physical, chemical, and practical characteristics of various contact lens materials while evaluating which material properties genuinely influence patient success, comfort, ocular physiology, and long-term wearability. Special emphasis will be placed on understanding modern silicone hydrogel technologies, oxygen permeability, water content, wettability, modulus, deposit resistance, surface treatments, and the relationship between marketing claims and clinically meaningful performance. The course will further explore practical patient considerations including dryness, comfort complaints, replacement schedules, environmental influences, and lifestyle-related material selection. This course contributes to the advancement of professional knowledge and contact lens dispensing skills by strengthening the ability of an optician to interpret contact lens material technologies, communicate more effectively with patients, evaluate lens performance critically, and provide evidence-based contact lens recommendations within contemporary eyecare practice.
