Course overview

This one-hour contact lens course is designed to enhance the dispensing opticians and contact lens professionals understanding of patient noncompliance related to contact lens wear, care, replacement schedules, hygiene practices, and follow-up care. Despite ongoing patient education efforts and advancements in contact lens technology, studies consistently demonstrate that a significant percentage of contact lens wearers fail to follow recommended wearing schedules, replacement guidelines, cleaning procedures, and safe lens handling protocols. The course will examine the behavioral, psychological, educational, and lifestyle factors that contribute to poor patient compliance and increased risk of contact lens-related complications. Participants will analyze common areas of noncompliance including overwear, sleeping in lenses, poor hygiene practices, improper solution use, water exposure, failure to replace cases, cosmetic contact lens misuse, and inadequate follow-up care. The course will further explore the relationship between patient communication, practitioner assumptions, convenience culture, and compliance behavior. Special emphasis will be placed on practical strategies designed to improve patient education, increase compliance, reduce complications, strengthen practitioner communication, and encourage safer contact lens habits. Participants will also evaluate the role of modern lens modalities, daily disposables, digital communication, social media influence, and evolving patient behaviors within contemporary contact lens practice.
