Course overview

Therapeutic sessions should never take place solely in a classroom or treatment room. Increasingly, research validates and promotes the use of less traditional approaches to optimize outcomes for children and teens such as using expressive arts, nature, and animals. This unique, 2-hour, view-on-demand, recorded webinar reviews ways that pediatric therapists can expand not only their therapeutic tools and perspectives, but also the worlds of children with ASD, ADHD, and learning challenges. Resources and strategies provide ways to bring these creative, out-of-the-box tools into daily work, no matter the therapeutic setting. At the end of this course, you will be able to (1) list the benefits of incorporating animals into your therapy sessions with children and teens; (2) identify three types of nature-based therapies applicable to occupational therapy; (3) state the positive neurological and physiological effects of using expressive arts as a therapeutic tool; (4) identify research on the use of music and art for children with ASD, ADHD, and learning differences; and (5) describe resources for using art, music, nature, and animals in pediatric occupational therapy. This distance learning, independent format is offered at 0.2 CEUs, Introductory Level, OT Service Delivery, and targeted to introductory- to intermediate-level OTs, COTAs, and other pediatric professionals. The course instructor, Lori Benson Adams, MEd, is an educational intervention specialist and owner of Breakthrough Learning Solutions in Atlanta, Georgia. She has over 35 years of experience with students who experience sensory, learning, behavioral, and executive function challenges.
