This 2-hour in-service course provides healthcare professionals with an overview of communication strategies for patients with cognitive impairment. Participants will review common causes of cognitive changes, including dementia, stroke, delirium, traumatic brain injury, and developmental disabilities. The course also covers oral, written, and non-verbal communication, as well as expressive aphasia, receptive aphasia, validation therapy, simple language, visual cues, assistive devices, and person-centered care. Emphasis is placed on improving patient safety, reducing frustration, supporting dignity, and promoting respectful communication with patients and families.
