When grief and trauma collide, clients may struggle with moving forward with their grief and finding purpose again in their lives. They are not just mourning a loss they may be traumatized by the events that led to the death or loss. Intrusive imagery, avoidance, and emotional numbing often become the ways in which clients manage their grief and trauma. Additionally, regret, guilt, and shame can become part of the narrative, which may negatively affect their ability to heal. The trauma often blocks the grief and the grief amplifies the trauma, leading to incessant rumination and pain, perhaps leaving the client unable to integrate the event. Clinicians unfamiliar with how to treat grief and trauma may then be unable to treat the client effectively when grief and trauma overlap concurrently in the clinical picture. This 6-hour training gives you an integrative approach to traumatic grief treating trauma and loss together, not separately. You will learn to differentiate normative grief, prolonged, and traumatic grief, understand how trauma responses impact the grieving process, and apply practical strategies that support both trauma processing and meaning-making. You will explore a range of traumatic loss experiences such as sudden, violent, ambiguous, stigmatized, and disenfranchised grief and build skills in pacing, regulation, and intervention through an evolving case study woven throughout the training. This course is designed for licensed mental health professionals who work with clients experiencing complicated loss and want clinical strategies that address trauma and grief as one.
