The population of older adults in the U.S. is growing drastically. By 2030, there will be over 72 million older adults - twice the number in 2000. Although life expectancy is growing, the number of years without morbidity is not. In fact, the period of life one is expected to live with serious disease or loss of mobility has increased in recent decades. Accordingly, clinicians must be prepared with the tools needed to provide effective rehabilitation for this growing demographic. Additionally, therapists must be ready to implement strategies for loss of function prevention. Clinicians involved with rehabilitation are now charged to add life to years rather than just years to life. There has been an explosion of research documenting the ability of exercise to reduce morbidity and enhance function in the older adult. This innovative one-day workshop will provide strategies & techniques based on best practices and the latest research to implement effective geriatric exercise interventions. This course is designed to go beyond discussing the aging process & simple bed mobility exercises. Through the use of video, case studies, hands on demonstration & discussion, attendees will be able to assess, design, & implement effective exercise interventions for the older patients' unique needs, abilities, & environment. You will return to your patients with tools to quickly determine how to treat common conditions in the older adult and ensure patient compliance for the best results.
