Counseling Through a Multicultural and Social Justice Lens

Course overview

This presentation provides an introduction to cultural competence and its essential role in ethical, effective, and client centered practice. Participants will explore the meaning of cultural competence, and review the professional ethical codes related to cultural competence across counseling, social work, marriage and family therapy, and art therapy disciplines. Participants will also be introduced to the Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies (MSJCC) framework, which offers guidance for developing self-awareness, understanding diverse client experiences, and promoting culturally responsive interventions. Attendees will gain knowledge and tools to enhance their ability to provide inclusive, equitable, and culturally informed care to the individuals and communities they serve. Learning Objectives: 1. Participants will be able to define cultural competence and explain its importance in effective and ethical clinical practice. 2. Participants will review the ethical codes related to cultural competence across counseling, social work, marriage and family therapy, and art therapy professions. 3. Participants will gain an understanding of cultural competence through the Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies (MSJCC) framework and explore its application in clinical work.
