Course overview

This 12-hour workshop teaches deep tissue techniques for the back using body mechanics and depth control. The course addresses the relationship between the spinal column, spinal nerves, and the muscle groups they innervate from the posterior neck through the lumbar region. Students spend the majority of class time in supervised hands-on practice, working in pairs with continuous instructor feedback. Techniques focus on using gravity, vertical alignment, and body weight transfer to achieve depth without excessive force, progressing through tissue layers from superficial to deep within massage therapy scope of practice. Day 1 covers spinal anatomy, spinal nerve-muscle relationships, body mechanics principles, and deep tissue techniques for the posterior neck (prone), shoulder girdle, and upper back. Day 2 covers deep tissue techniques for the mid back and low back, and the integration of all techniques into a complete posterior session flow from the cervical spine to the lumbar spine.
