Course overview

Summary This two hour presentation is designed to address the issues related to Preventing Medical Errors in a Counseling Setting.  The importance of Therapists understanding the concepts and strategies in defining, recognizing and addressing potential errors in clinical settings will be highlighted.  In addition to meeting the state requirements for re-licensure this workshop helps participants incorporate the concepts of continuous quality improvement in clinical settings. Learning Objectives Participants will be able to:  o Define medical errors as defined by Institutes of Medicine.  o Identify common types of errors in the counseling setting.  o Discuss the scope and impact of the medical errors problem.  o Cite factors that impact the occurrence of medical errors.  o Recognize error-prone situations in counseling settings.  o Provide leadership in changing systems that set people up for failure and in developing safety plans.  o Assess the safety needs of special populations.  o Outline reporting responsibilities and issues around reporting errors.
