Course overview

Program Description Many people avoid difficult conversations in an effort to preserve harmony, protect relationships, or avoid discomfort. Yet what often appears to be peace on the surface can come at a significant cost: resentment, self-abandonment, adverse health consequences, and disconnection in the relationships that matter most. In this engaging and thought-provoking keynote, licensed marriage and family therapist, TEDx speaker, and author Colette Jane Fehr explores why people avoid conflict, how protective patterns develop, and what it takes to communicate with greater authenticity and courage. Drawing from personal experience, clinical practice, attachment theory, and nervous system science, Fehr examines the fears, unmet needs, and old wounds that lie beneath everyday relational struggles. Through storytelling, audience reflection, clinical examples, and experiential exercises, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the hidden costs of conflict avoidance and discover practical principles for helping clients, and themselves, move from protection to connection through greater self-awareness, emotional regulation, self-compassion, and self- connected communication. Learning Objectives At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to: 1. Identify common protective strategies individuals use to avoid conflict and vulnerability in relationships. 2. Describe the role of attachment needs, emotional triggers, and nervous system responses in shaping communication patterns. 3. Recognize how avoidance and self-silencing contribute to relational disconnection and emotional distress. 4. Differentiate between protective reactions and vulnerable, self-connected communication. 5. Apply key principles of self-connected communication to support self-soothing, and more authentic and effective interpersonal interactions.
