Course overview

This course examines psychiatric disorders commonly diagnosed in adults and children using the DSM-5 guidelines including schizophrenia, dementia, substance abuse, depression, bipolar disorders, eating and sleeping disorders, anxiety, domestic violence, and disassociation. Practical applications are emphasized, including the use of current treatment modalities, medications, and therapeutic communication skills, and the recognition of cultural differences in how mental illness is perceived and treated in both adults and children.
