Course overview

Interdisciplinary collaboration and coordination are essential to successfully facilitate early mobility and rehabilitation in the intensive care unit (ICU). A multidisciplinary stakeholder meeting focused on improving long term outcomes for ICU survivors identified persistent silos between critical care and rehabilitation clinicians as a significant barrier to advancing the field and optimizing patient outcomes. Despite growing evidence supporting early rehabilitation, inconsistent communication, workflow challenges, and cultural norms within ICUs continue to limit implementation. Effective ICU rehabilitation requires the intentional creation of a culture grounded in proactive rehabilitation principles and sustained interdisciplinary collaboration among intensivists, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, respiratory therapists, and other key team members. This activity is designed to address these gaps by fostering shared understanding, strengthening team based strategies, and promoting integration of evidence based rehabilitation practices into routine ICU care.
