Course overview

Generational trauma often lives beneath words, hidden in the body, nervous system, and family dynamics, shaping attachment patterns across generations. In the playroom, these deep-seated wounds surface through the child's play-through the symbols, actions, and sensory experiences that emerge during play therapy. This training invites play therapists to explore how sandtray therapy and attachment-based play therapy can be used to access and heal intergenerational trauma. In the playroom, children communicate their experiences not through verbal dialogue, but through play - using miniature figures, movements, and symbols to express what they cannot say. By attuning to the child's play, therapists can recognize the inherited wounds that shape behaviors and relationships, offering opportunities for healing that words alone cannot provide. You'll learn to: Identify generational trauma as it shows up in sand scenes during play therapy, using the symbolic language of play to decode family patterns and unconscious themes. Implement both directive and non-directive play therapy techniques to help children heal and repair attachment disruptions, facilitating safe, co-regulated play that rebuilds trust and connection.
