This 7-hour introductory course teaches clinicians the fundamentals of static orthotic (splint) design and fabrication for the upper extremity. Participants will review relevant hand and forearm anatomy, biomechanical principles, and common splint types (static, static-progressive, serial-static, and dynamic). The curriculum covers thermoplastic material properties (memory, rigidity, conformability, perforation, bonding, thickness) and guides clinicians in selecting appropriate materials for clinical goals. Core skills demonstrated include pattern- making, cutting, molding, edge finishing, strapping, and patient positioning, with step-by-step fabrication of common orthoses such as finger gutters, thumb spicas, and wrist cock-ups. Practical workstation setup, essential tools, troubleshooting tips, and patient instruction are emphasized to ensure safe, comfortable, and effective splints. Intended audience: Occupational therapists, physical therapists, prosthetists/orthotists, hand clinicians, and allied health professionals seeking foundational splinting skills.
