Course overview

This 90-minute mini lecture introduces the Clinical Acronym Technique CAT, an innovative and model flexible intervention designed to help clients explore and reconstruct meaning around emotionally charged words and experiences. By transforming a single word into a personalized acronym, clients externalize internal narratives, making implicit beliefs more visible and clinically accessible. Participants will learn how CAT can be integrated across Marriage and Family Therapy models to support cognitive reframing, emotional processing, and systemic insight. Through demonstration and guided application, clinicians will explore how this technique facilitates movement from problem saturated language toward strengths based and preferred narratives, while remaining adaptable to the therapists theoretical orientation and the pacing of the clinical process.
