Course overview

Describe the prevalence, causes, and structural anatomy of the temporomandibular joint relevant to clinical practice. Identify the accessory muscles, nerves, arteries, and fascia associated with temporomandibular joint function. Differentiate the static positions and functional movements of the temporomandibular joint during mastication. Describe the muscles of mastication and accessory jaw muscles that produce opening, closing, protraction, retraction, and laterotrusion. Demonstrate passive examination of the temporomandibular joint through history, observation, and palpation techniques. Apply the VROM scale and mandibular gait analysis to document and interpret temporomandibular joint dysfunction. Recognize pathological conditions of the temporomandibular joint involving bones, teeth, and associated structures. Identify muscular pathologies of the temporomandibular joint including contusion, tendinosis, myofasciitis, trismus, and trigger points. Explain conservative treatment approaches for temporomandibular joint dysfunction including modalities, mobilization, and mouth guard use. Evaluate contraindications to TMJ manipulation and select appropriate treatments for synovitis, capsulitis, and ligamentous injuries.
