Course overview

EMS providers routinely administer supplemental oxygen to patients with breathing difficulties, hypoxemia, and various medical emergencies, yet recent research shows that hyperoxygenation can actually worsen outcomes for certain patient populations including those with acute coronary syndrome and stroke. Understanding proper oxygen delivery requires knowledge of cellular respiration, FiO2 values, pulse oximetry readings, and the appropriate use of various delivery devices from nasal cannulas to non-rebreather masks. This interactive online course will teach you how to calculate oxygen tank duration, select appropriate oxygen delivery devices based on patient needs, and recognize when hyperoxygenation may be harmful to patient outcomes. Additionally, you will learn oxygen cylinder safety procedures, proper use of regulators and humidifiers, and special considerations for pediatric patients, stoma patients, and those with facial trauma or dental appliances.
