Individuals with asymptomatic colonization with C. auris can readily contaminate their immediate environment leading to outbreaks. Therefore, identifying individuals colonized with C. auris is an effective and proactive strategy to prevent its spread in healthcare facilities. To date, certain risk factors for C. auris colonization and infection have been well established, including direct exposure to known cases, mechanical ventilation, transfer from a high endemicity areas and colonization with other multi-drug-resistant organisms. Frequent anatomical sites used for collecting screening samples are axilla and groin, but evidence supports including nares or hands to increase susceptibility. Methods for sample processing include PCR and culture. Consideration for screening method of choice include local epidemiology and operational decisions regarding patient placement.
