Course overview

This training is designed to help crisis line workers maintain ethical, effective and compassionate communication during interactions with callers. Participants will explore the role of professional boundaries in crisis intervention, examine common boundary challenges that arise during crisis calls and practice evidence-based communication strategies to balance empathy with professionalism. The session integrates the NASW Code of Ethics. It emphasizes cultural responsiveness and includes role-play and reflective exercises to strengthen boundary-setting skills, prevent burnout and enhance client safety and trust. After completing this training, participants will be able to: 1. Determine appropriate professional boundaries in crisis intervention. 2. Characterize boundary challenges unique to crisis calls. 3. Apply strategies to maintain empathy while upholding limits. 4. Practice communication techniques that de-escalate while preserving self and client safety.
