Course overview

When there is potential for perinatal HIV transmission, evidence-based, patient-centered counseling should be provided to support shared decision-making about infant feeding. Counseling about infant feeding should begin prior to conception or as early as possible in pregnancy; information about and plans for infant feeding should be reviewed throughout pregnancy and again after delivery. This program discusses 2023 and 2024 changes in infant feeding in the U.S. Perinatal HIV Guidelines. Topics include the motivations of those who want to breast/chest feed, what is known about the risk of HIV transmission via breastmilk with and without antiretrovirals and what changed in the U.S. Perinatal HIV Guidelines as of 2023/2024.
