Course overview

Burn injuries occur when the skin comes into contact with a damaging agent, including radiation, chemicals, high temperatures, electricity, or friction. Burn injuries are preventable, yet non-fatal burns remain among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality globally. These injuries, ranging from mild to severe, present unique challenges that necessitate a coordinated response from the healthcare team. The severity of burns is influenced by factors such as the duration and intensity of exposure and the burn's location on the body. This can lead to significant variability in burn-related morbidity and mortality. Prompt and effective treatment is essential to prevent complications and promote optimal healing. The management of burn injuries benefits significantly from applying the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) competencies, which emphasize team-based care and collaboration. This continuing education activity will provide learners with a comprehensive review of the classification, pathophysiology, and management of burn injuries. Special attention will be given to the roles of the multidisciplinary care team to deepen understanding of how interprofessional collaboration can enhance outcomes in burn care.
