Course overview

Effective mental health treatment depends on the ability to build trusting therapeutic relationships while maintaining clear professional boundaries and communicating effectively with clients. This one-hour continuing education course provides mental health professionals with practical strategies for fostering rapport, recognizing, and maintaining healthy professional boundaries, and identifying communication barriers that can interfere with treatment outcomes. Participants will explore the distinction between appropriate boundary crossings and ethical boundary violations, examine common boundary challenges involving self-disclosure, digital communication, time, and emotional involvement, and learn to recognize early warning signs that may compromise the therapeutic relationship. The course also addresses common communication barriers; including psychological, cognitive, cultural, language, environmental, and clinician-related factors and offers evidence-based techniques to improve client engagement, strengthen the therapeutic alliance, and enhance clinical effectiveness. Through real-world examples and practical applications, participants will gain skills to communicate with empathy while maintaining professional standards, reduce misunderstandings, improve treatment outcomes, and provide ethical, client-centered care.
