Course overview
The Damocles Syndrome refers to a feeling of impending doom, even in the middle of apparent good fortune and outward success. Greek mythology tells of Damocles who angered the king, who then invited Damocles to sit in his throne at a lavish banquet; however, Damocles was seated under a sword suspended from the ceiling by a single hair. This 'Sword of Damocles' is a symbol of anxiety and constant fear. It applies to those who experienced a serious illness, their care givers, loved ones, and to those who suffered any traumatic event as well as those living under extreme pressure. This 3-hour course explores various conditions when one might suffer from the Damocles Syndrome; compares the Damocles Syndrome to PTSD; and explores evidenced-based treatment options that can process trauma and mitigate hypervigilance.
