Course overview

Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) is an effective, safe, evidence-based treatment to use in the rehabilitation setting. BFR has shown to result in rapid improvements in muscle strength and functional aerobic capacity in shorter amounts of time than traditional training. Blood flow restriction is achieved by applying a tourniquet or cuff to the patients upper or lower extremities to create an environment where the brain and body think it is performing high intensity exercise when very low resistance is used. Use of blood flow restriction training has been shown to increase motor unit recruitment and muscle strength and size at low intensities (30% of 1-rep max, RM.) In this course you will learn the fundamentals of BFR physiology and how to start a protocol for various patient populations. A demonstration will show how this is applied to the upper and lower extremity. The information learned during this course will enable the clinician to understand the application of BFR to their current patient population.
