Course overview

Participants will be able to deepen clinical knowledge of addiction and recovery, including advanced application of MOUD and harm reduction in behavioral health settings and the impact of addiction on families. Participants will be able to apply advanced counseling strategies motivational interviewing with difficult clients, CBT for substance use disorders, and step-by-step trauma interventions to strengthen engagement and overcome barriers to treatment. Participants will be able to elevate clinical documentation to prove medical necessity and satisfy insurance and audit requirements across the full record, from informed consent to discharge summary. Participants will be able to lead more complex treatment groups, managing group dynamics, member transitions, and multicultural considerations. Participants will be able to sharpen assessment and diagnosis, including DSM-5-TR updates and skilled biopsychosocial interviewing for trauma, suicide, and substance use. Participants will be able to advance treatment planning, writing measurable goals and objectives and monitoring client progress and outcomes with the treatment team. Participants will be able to manage professional ethics and boundaries using a defined ethical decision-making model, and navigate treatment teams, referral sources, and professional relationships. Participants will be able to complete the additional 30 hours of Board-approved SUD education required to move from the CDCA Preliminary to the renewable CDCA credential.
