Course overview

On-demand (recorded) content. Webinar will be available on October 2, 2026. This is an updated version of our Specialty Mental Health Procedures and Action Plans: Eating Disorders, Substance Use, and ADHD course. This is an intermediate-level webinar analyzing variables related to establishing policies, procedures, guidelines, and action plans to address eating disorders and disordered eating in athletes. Eating disorders are mental health conditions with one of the highest mortality rates (Hoeken & Hoek, 2020). Approximately 92% of athletic trainers working in a collegiate setting encountered disordered eating (Sudano & Miles, 2017), and athletes tend to be diagnosed with eating disorders at higher rates than non-athletes (Bratland-Sanda & Sundgot-Borgen). Yet, mental health literacy around eating disorders and disordered eating tends to be low for coaches, athletic trainers, and mental health professionals who do not specialize in this work (Cadavid et al., 2025; Kroshus et al., 2018; MacCaughelty, 2023; Ostrowski et al., 2023). Various guidelines and Best Practices indicate that procedures should be developed to address a variety of mental health concerns, including those on the eating disorder spectrum (Torstveit et al., 2023; Wells et al., 2020). However, available data indicates that many organizations do not have thorough procedures in place (Jang et al., 2024; Young et al., 2023) and many could benefit from guidance regarding what to include in their overall Mental Health Plan. Therefore, this course is designed to assist those tasked with drafting, revising, and following mental health policies, procedures, guidelines, and action plans with specific information that they can include regarding eating disorders and disordered eating (Carter, 2019; Vaughan et al., 2004; Wise, 2018). This webinar is appropriate for athletic trainers, licensed mental health professionals, and mental performance consultants and will be beneficial for any stage of conceptualization, writing, or re-writing of these plans.
