Taking time to understand and develop the skill for conflict management in vet med is critical to the path in truly honoring the human-animal-bond. The emotions related to the human-animal-bond can be strong. These emotions are repeatedly the fuel in which drive individuals through great sacrifice to be a part of the veterinary profession. While also being the reason for clients, and ourselves, to be triggered thereby creating these moments of conflict. When individuals feel they are failing to support the bond, they often look on where to send the shame. Frequently leading people into a space of judgment, both internally and externally. Unfortunately, when clients follow this path, the veterinary professional is not uncommonly on the receiving end of an undeserving focus of anger and frustration. Learning to navigate these moments is imperative in partnering with others in the shared end goal of helping animals. Understanding the emotions related to conflict is the first step in recognizing the path to a common solution through these conflicts. Finding ways to embrace the emotions from both ourselves and the other party involved, brings sustainability within the profession. Staying connected to a common goal to support the human-animal-bond allows for longevity in the well-being of all involved.
