Course overview

Spinal Trauma, Concussion, and Interprofessional Relationships is an advanced academic course designed to develop a comprehensive understanding of diagnostic imaging as it relates to traumatic injuries of the brain and spine. The course focuses on the radiologic identification, interpretation, and clinical significance of trauma-related findings, including concussion, mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), spinal ligament injuries, disc pathology, spinal cord trauma, and post-traumatic neurological sequelae. Participants will examine the role of MRI, CT, advanced neuroimaging, and specialized diagnostic technologies in detecting both overt and subtle traumatic abnormalities that may significantly impact patient outcomes. Emphasis is placed on recognizing imaging patterns associated with acute and chronic injury, understanding mechanisms of trauma, and identifying findings that are frequently overlooked or underreported in clinical practice. Through evidence-based instruction and case-based analysis, the course emphasizes the integration of imaging findings with patient history, mechanism of injury, physical examination findings, and neurological presentation. Special attention is devoted to the evaluation of concussion-related pathology, traumatic axonal injury, ligamentous instability, spinal trauma, and the progression of post-traumatic degenerative changes. Additional discussion includes selected imaging findings associated with tumors and infections when relevant to differential diagnosis and the exclusion of competing pathological processes. By the conclusion of the course, participants will be equipped to critically evaluate trauma imaging studies and reports, communicate effectively with radiologists and medical specialists, and incorporate imaging findings into accurate diagnosis, prognosis determination, impairment assessment, and informed clinical decision-making.
