Introduction to Ultrasound-Guided Cystocentesis (TECH461)

Course overview

Urine collection and analysis may be part of a complete healthy pet screening panel or performed in patients with clinical signs associated with upper urinary tract or lower urinary tract. Ultrasound-guided cystocentesis increases the likelihood of obtaining a sterile urine sample in obese pets or pets with small bladders compared to manual palpation techniques. In addition, it provides an opportunity to assess the urinary bladder for common abnormalities. Because this procedure is often performed by veterinary technicians, they are often the first person on the medical team to evaluate a patient's bladder with ultrasound and should be aware of common abnormalities. This course will review the normal ultrasound appearance of the canine and feline bladder, and contrast normal with common abnormalities, such as stones, wall masses or wall thickening. It will also review potential risks and complications of the procedure, and review in a step-by-step manner how to perform the procedure safely.
