Course overview

All individuals who provide care to people in the healthcare environment are exposed to a variety of sources of infection. It is important for all employees in this environment to have a basic understanding of the concepts of infection. Staff members must work together to prevent the spread of infection to patients, visitors, and other personnel. Infections can be exceptionally harmful to individuals with chronic diseases or to those who are very young or very old. This learning activity will help unlicensed assistive personnel (UAPs) better understand infection risks and take the necessary precautions. It outlines the chain of infection and the role of microorganisms as sources of infection. The learning activity also describes universal and isolation precautions, proper handwashing techniques, personal protection and sterile techniques, and national bloodborne pathogens standards.
