Resident Behavior and Needs in Assisted Living Facilities

Course overview

This course prepares assisted living facility direct-care staff to recognize, understand, and appropriately respond to resident behaviors and underlying needs. Learners will examine how physical discomfort, cognitive changes, emotional distress, environmental conditions, communication barriers, personal history, and unmet needs can influence behavior. The course emphasizes respectful, person-centered responses that protect resident dignity, independence, privacy, safety, and decision-making. These principles are consistent with Florida's expectation that assisted living facilities operate as residential, homelike environments that help residents remain as independent as possible.
