Dementia in America: Trends, Types, and Tools for Clinical Practice

Course overview

Dementia affects millions of individuals and families in the United States and requires coordinated, interprofessional care. This webinar provides an overview of dementia prevalence, the four major types of dementia, their clinical characteristics, and the importance of early recognition and differential diagnosis, including distinguishing dementia from delirium. Participants will also examine modifiable risk factors, caregiver considerations, community resources, and practical strategies for supporting individuals experiencing behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia. The session will review safety considerations, environmental supports, and evidence-based interventions (including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Reminiscence Therapy, Validation Therapy, and environmental modifications) that promote quality of life for individuals living with dementia. Emphasis will be placed on practical, person-centered approaches that support patients, families, caregivers, and interdisciplinary care teams across healthcare settings.
