Management of Feline Urethral Obstruction and New Evidence on Dietary Modification

Course overview

Feline urethral obstruction (UO) is one of the most common and life-threatening emergencies encountered in small animal practice. Rapid recognition and appropriate intervention are essential to reduce morbidity and mortality. This lecture will review the pathophysiology of urethral obstruction, emergency stabilization of the blocked cat, electrolyte and acid-base derangements, evidence-based approaches to urinary catheterization and analgesia, post-obstructive care, and strategies to reduce recurrence. Current literature and practical clinical recommendations will be discussed to improve outcomes in cats presenting with urethral obstruction.
