Learn moreCourse overview
This course explores the unique factors that contribute to suicide risk among older adults, including medical illness, functional decline, grief, social isolation, and end-of-life concerns. Participants will examine the etiology of suicide in later life and the complex relationship between aging, quality of life, and perceptions of burden, hopelessness, and loss of autonomy. The training reviews ethical principles relevant to clinical work with older adults, including autonomy, dignity, beneficence, and professional responsibility, and explores their application to suicide assessment, intervention, and end-of-life considerations. Participants will examine challenges that may arise when balancing respect for client values and self-determination with patient safety and risk management responsibilities. Evidence-based approaches to suicide intervention will also be presented, including comprehensive risk assessment, collaborative safety planning, means restriction strategies, and interventions designed to promote hope, connection, and quality of life. Through practical examples and clinical application, participants will strengthen their ability to provide compassionate, ethical, and effective suicide prevention care for older adults.
