Course overview

First responders face life-threatening exposure to six categories of harm at terrorist incidents: thermal, radiological, asphyxiation, chemical, etiological, and mechanical (TRACEM) threats that can cause severe injury or death without proper protection. Many emergency personnel lack adequate training in recognizing these hazards and implementing appropriate self-protective measures, potentially becoming victims themselves and compromising their ability to help others. This interactive online course will teach you how to identify the characteristics of each TRACEM threat category and implement the three key principles of self-protection: time, distance, and shielding. Additionally, you will learn to select appropriate levels of personal protective equipment (PPE) for different threat scenarios, recognize psychological effects of terrorism on responders, and apply proper scene management techniques to safely approach and operate at potential terrorist incidents.
