Course overview

Trauma patients represent a significant portion of medical emergencies that healthcare providers encounter and are associated with high morbidity and mortality when delays in surgical interventions occur. Emergency Medical Services personnel can reduce trauma-related deaths by applying knowledge of kinematics to predict the type and degree of a patient's injury based upon the mechanism of injury and forces involved in an accident. This interactive online course will teach Basic Life Support and Advanced Life Support personnel how to use the physics of trauma to develop a high index of suspicion and identify potential hidden internal injuries. Additionally, you will learn to analyze injury patterns associated with vehicle collisions, falls, and penetrating trauma while understanding how energy transfer affects tissue damage in specific body systems.
