Laser Therapy 101: Foundations and Applications

Course overview

This home study course provides an evidence-based introduction to laser therapy and photobiomodulation for the management of musculoskeletal pain, tissue healing, rehabilitation, and performance enhancement. Participants will develop a comprehensive understanding of the biological mechanisms underlying laser therapy, including cellular energy production, mitochondrial function, cytochrome c oxidase activation, and the dose-dependent effects of light on tissue repair and recovery. The course distinguishes between low-level laser therapy (LLLT), high-intensity laser therapy (HILT), LED therapy, and other light-based modalities while examining the scientific principles that guide their clinical application. Learners will explore the critical treatment variables that influence therapeutic outcomes, including wavelength, power output, energy density, treatment duration, tissue penetration, and biphasic dose response. Current research regarding laser therapy for acute injuries, wound healing, pain management, recovery, and athletic performance will be critically evaluated to support evidence-informed clinical decision-making. Practical instruction emphasizes selecting appropriate treatment parameters, interpreting the scientific literature, and integrating laser therapy into comprehensive rehabilitation and performance programs. Upon completion, participants will possess the foundational knowledge necessary to safely and effectively incorporate laser therapy into patient care, utilizing evidence-based treatment parameters to optimize tissue healing, reduce pain, accelerate recovery, and improve functional outcomes across a variety of musculoskeletal conditions.
