Course overview
Food cravings are often a nuisance to those who have them. However, there are certain cases where they are beneficial, such as thirst when dehydrated, protein cravings with increased activity levels, and carbohydrate cravings with increased activity levels. Though more than not cravings are induced by emotions or other neuropsychological issues. The four most common emotions at the core of emotional food cravings are fear, anger, tension, and shame (FATS). Other reasons for food cravings include pregnancy, or the presence of a ?sweet tooth? while on a restricted carbohydrate diet. Also discussed are food cravings that strike during PMS, caused by hormonal fluctuations. As food cravings are often for unhealthy foods, suggestions are given for healthy alternatives to turn to when food cravings strike. Other than emotional cues, there are biological triggers to food cravings and appetite. Though the pathways are complex, studies have been performed to show the links between serotonin, leptin, and galanin to appetite control. Recent studies into these systems are covered and discussed in detail.
