This longitudinal study evaluated whether exceeding empirically derived low-risk gambling thresholds increases the risk of future gambling harm or problem gambling. Using data from two Canadian cohort studies (QLS and LLLP), researchers followed over 4,200 adults without gambling problems at baseline over five years. Results showed that exceeding limits on gambling frequency, monthly expenditure, or percent of household income spent on gambling significantly raised the likelihood of developing moderate harm or problem gambling, even after adjusting for other modifiable risk factors. Mental health disorders, stressful life events, cognitive distortions, and playing EGMs or casino games also independently predicted future harm. Notably, each additional low-risk threshold exceeded increased the probability of moderate harm by approximately 30%. The findings support the public health utility of low-risk gambling guidelines as a prevention strategy.
