Archetypal Ritual: Hungering for the Sacred in Human Psychology

Course overview

A three hour and 15 minute workshop to explore psychological structures that underlie ritualistic behavior across cultures, and how ritual loss and ritual hunger manifest clinically. This workshop will discuss how rituals engage thinking, emotions, body sensation and intuition, offering the possibility of containment for the whole person in and out of clinical settings. Aspects of ethical ritual-informed therapy will be discussed and participants will engage in experiential exercises to explore ways clinical work with rituals may support the whole person. A case study will be shared aiding recognition of and working with ritual hunger within an ethical framework. Practical approaches for introducing ritual-informed perspectives into therapeutic work will be discussed.
