Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a virus that attacks the body's immune system, specifically the CD4 (T-helper) cells that help the body fight infection. Over time, if left untreated, HIV can destroy enough of these cells that the body loses its ability to fight off infections and certain cancers.
