Course overview
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an excellent modality for imaging musculoskeletal anatomy of the upper and lower extremities, especially when a soft tissue injury of a ligament or tendon is suspected. In order for high quality diagnostic upper and lower extremity images to be obtained of the musculoskeletal anatomy, the MRI radiologic technologist (RT) and imagining assistant (IA) must be well versed in positioning and isocenter landmarking for each of these studies. This course begins with a brief review of positioning and its relevance in preventing radiofrequency burns. Then, all MRI studies of the upper and lower extremities are discussed including topics related to anatomical landmarks, patient positioning, coil selection and set up, patient instructions, and isocenter landmarking. The course ends with a review of considerations related to the pediatric, geriatric, bariatric, and trauma patient and a brief discussion about remote scanning in MRI as well. After completing this course, MRI RTs and IAs should have the knowledge to position and isocenter landmark appropriately for all musculoskeletal MRIs of the upper and lower extremities, including both joints and long bones.
